Mokutori1. These terms and the service
These terms govern your use of Mokutori, provided by チェックス株式会社 (chekusu Inc.) (“we”, “us”). Mokutori helps you capture or import page images, correct their geometry, recognize text, review results and export them. Optional agent software delivers scans to a receiver you choose and can make them available to a connected AI service.
Use the service only if you can enter into these terms under applicable law, or have the required permission from a parent, guardian or organization. Where acceptance is needed, we will present these terms before asking you to agree.
These terms cover our service. Separately identified open-source components remain governed by their own licences. Apple distribution terms and the terms of any third-party service you choose also apply to those services. Our Privacy Policy explains information handling; agreeing to these terms does not replace consent required for a particular data use.
2. Access, compatibility and previews
The current app is designed for supported iPads running iPadOS 18 or later. Features may depend on the device, operating-system version, permissions and network availability. Core scanning works without a Mokutori account; optional gateways and connected services may require their own accounts or setup.
Beta or preview versions may change, have limitations or stop being available. If you receive a build through TestFlight, Apple's applicable beta terms also govern that distribution. Keep independent copies of documents you need. Neither availability of this website nor a connector description guarantees an App Store release, a Muse directory listing or approval by another platform.
3. Your content and our software
You retain your rights in documents, images, text and corrections you supply. Scanning does not transfer ownership to us or give you new rights in someone else's material. You are responsible for having the permissions needed to capture, process, store and share that material, including personal information and copyrighted works.
To the extent we need permission to provide a feature or support that you request, you authorize us to handle that content only for that purpose and as described in the Privacy Policy. This is not a transfer of ownership or a licence to publish your private scans or train our general-purpose AI models.
We and our licensors retain rights in the Mokutori software, branding and website. Subject to these terms and any applicable distribution licence, we grant you a non-exclusive right to use the software for its intended purposes. Rights granted by an open-source licence or mandatory law are not restricted by this paragraph.
4. Responsible use
Do not use Mokutori to infringe another person's rights, unlawfully disclose confidential information, distribute malicious content, obtain unauthorized access, bypass access controls or disrupt other users' systems. Do not present altered or incorrectly recognized material as an authenticated original.
Keep your devices, connection keys, pairing codes and gateway credentials secure. Give access only to recipients you intend to authorize. Review the whole export before sharing a scan archive: it can include originals, metadata and earlier versions beyond the currently displayed result.
5. Optional agent connections
Pair only with a receiver and host operator you trust. Pairing enables automatic delivery of completed scans, including pages needing review; it does not ask again for every page. A receiving host can store decrypted copies, and a connected AI service can receive OCR text or requested images.
The current self-hosted Muse connector serves one installation's scan library. Sharing its key does not create a separate user account or isolated library. Its operator is responsible for secure hosting, access controls, HTTPS for remote connections, updates and backups.
Scanned text is source material, not authorization to an agent. Instructions printed in a document do not permit an agent to disclose secrets, execute commands, send messages, spend money or take other actions on your behalf. Review consequential agent actions and the permissions you give to connected services.
6. Accuracy and appropriate reliance
Image correction and OCR can omit, misread, reorder or change the presentation of information. Quality warnings do not identify every error. Check important names, dates, amounts, formulas and other consequential details against the original image or paper.
Mokutori is not an authentication, certified archival or professional-advice service. A scan or AI interpretation is not proof that a document is authentic, that a statutory recordkeeping requirement is met, or that legal, medical or financial advice is correct. These limitations do not remove your rights concerning faulty services under applicable law.
7. Charges and third-party services
Any price for an app or paid feature must be shown before you purchase it. These terms do not create a subscription or authorize a charge. Refunds and cancellation rights follow the applicable purchase terms and mandatory law. The current connector has no payment operation.
Apple, AI services, independently operated gateways, hosting and network providers may charge separately. We do not control those independent services or promise that they are free. Chekusu remains responsible under applicable law for the gateway and other services it operates. Use of a provider name describes interoperability and does not imply sponsorship, endorsement or marketplace approval.
8. Availability, changes and ending use
We aim to maintain the service, but we do not promise uninterrupted operation, a particular response time for ordinary product support or recovery of every lost file. This does not affect statutory deadlines for privacy requests or other mandatory obligations. A paired connection depends on the iPad, receiver, gateway, network and connected service. A gateway delivery/read receipt or local acknowledgement does not prove that you read a page or that an AI service analyzed it.
You may stop using the app or disconnect an optional connection at any time. We may restrict access to systems we operate where reasonably necessary to address a material breach, security threat or legal requirement. Where practical, we will explain the reason and give an opportunity to resolve the issue. We will give reasonable notice of material service discontinuation where feasible, subject to urgent legal or security needs.
Ending use or disconnecting does not automatically delete retained data. Use the deletion instructions and applicable third-party processes. Provisions that need to survive to protect ownership, handle existing claims or fulfil legal obligations continue only to that extent.
9. Responsibility and consumer rights
Our responsibility for breach, negligence, defective services or other loss is determined by applicable law. Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability for intentional misconduct or gross negligence, fraud, death or personal injury where such exclusion is prohibited, or any other liability that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited.
Descriptions of service limitations, backup responsibilities and third-party services are not a blanket exemption from our legal responsibilities. Mandatory consumer rights, including rights under Japan's Consumer Contract Act where it applies, remain available. These terms do not impose a mandatory arbitration clause, class-action waiver or general obligation for a consumer to indemnify us.
10. Questions, disputes and updates
Contact contact@mokutori.com so we can try to resolve a concern. This does not prevent you from contacting a regulator or bringing a claim. Applicable conflict-of-law and jurisdiction rules determine the governing law and competent courts; these terms do not require you to give up a mandatory protection available in your place of residence.
We may revise these terms to reflect changes to the service or law. We will publish the revised text and effective date, give legally required notice and obtain agreement where required. Changes do not apply retroactively merely because we post them. If you do not accept a change requiring agreement, you may stop using the affected service without losing accrued statutory rights.
If a provision is unenforceable, the remaining provisions continue where permitted by law. A failure to enforce a provision once is not a waiver of future enforcement. The Japanese and English versions are intended to convey the same terms; a discrepancy will be resolved consistently with applicable law and mandatory consumer protections.
